The Education, Children & Families Department have just revealed a hugely significant change to the proposed extension to the school. The project was only ever intended to improve the accommodation and bring the whole school and nursery onto a single site. It was never intended to increase the capacity and the consistent view of the department was that an 18 class organisation was the most the site could adequately support.
However, given the increasing pressures on the school roll, the Department is now proposing that the School operate up to 20 classes, that the brief should now be for a 3 storey, 8 class extension, and that the nursery remain in the annexe for the forseeable future.
This proposed change has considerable educational, organisational and financial implications, and yet the Department would like this new brief to be ‘agreed’ by the end of June.
The following letter from the School Council to Councillors on the Education, Children & Families Committee gives more background to the issue and highlights our concerns;
